Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used to protect teeth affected by decay at the back of the mouth. They are a restorative treatment used before a tooth requires a crown or when a tooth cannot support a filling.

Inlays are bonded into place within the cusps or tips of a tooth and onlays are bonded over the cusps of the tooth, for extra protection.

They can be made from porcelain or composite resin which are colour-matched to your teeth and are often used to replace silver amalgam fillings. Inlays and onlays can also be made from gold.

Fitting inlays and onlays

If you require inlays or onlays, the dentist will remove decay, damage or an old silver filling before making an impression of your tooth. This impression allows the laboratory to create the inlay or onlay. Whilst you wait for this fixture to be made, a temporary restoration will be used to protect your natural tooth until the next visit.

At the second appointment, the dentist will ensure the inlay or onlay fits correctly before using a special adhesive to bond it into place. The process is complete once the dentist polishes the inlay or onlay to ensure it feels and looks natural within your mouth.
